In the early 1800s, the land that is now Groves was located in what is now Collin County. The area was part of the Mexican territory and was not conquered until after the American Revolution. The first mention of Groves as a place to live comes from 1827 when John Fenton, a surveyor for the Texas Rangers, reported back to his superiors that there were “a few families living near by on good land” who had “no cattle or anything to trade with us.” In 1845, James Bowie purchased some of the land east of what is now Groves from Juan Ortiz. Bowie began building his rancho around this time and named it after himself – Bowie Rancho. In 1847, he married Nancie McCombs and moved into his new property with her and their children. By 1850, Bowie had over twenty-five thousand acres under cultivation and seven seventy-five miles of road between him and Austin. He also became one of the most powerful men in Travis County. During this time period there were several mass shootings in Texas which led to increased attention towards gun control laws in America at that time. On July 6th, 1849, Jameson Brady shot six people at a theater in San Antonio while attending a play by Andrew Jackson. After this event many legislators began working on passing laws restricting firearms ownership within reason in order to reduce such tragedies like this one from happening again and again across America. By 1860, Groves had become an important local center due to its location on I-35W which connected Austin with Dallas and other parts of Texas A&M University (now Rice). This made it easy for goods traffic to move through Groves without having to go through Dallas or Houston
