Groves, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in east-central Midland County. The population was 7,803 at the 2010 census, up from 6,827 at the 2000 census. Groves is adjacent to Midland and Odessa on the west and east sides of Interstate 35W. It is bordered by Midland to the north and east, San Angelo to the south-southwest, and Lubbock to the southwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, Groves has a total area of , all of it land. The name "Groves" was given by Jno. Mifflin after he saw a grove of oak trees near his home in 1872 while surveying for an oil well site in what is now Midland County. In 1874–75 James Purdy built a cabin on a hilltop near present day Groves for himself and his family as their winter quarters during their exploration for oil wells in East Texas (now West Texas). In 1898 A&P Ranch owner George Wickersham donated 5 acres (2 ha) of country along I-35W between Groves and Lubbock to be used as part of their extensive ranch holdings withinMidlandCounty limits; this ranch became known as Wickersham Open Range Country later that year when other cattle ranchers moved into it from outlying counties such as Bowie and Panhandle Raton1 In 1912 Wickersham sold off most or all of his ranch holdings including Groves Open Range Country to Harry Hines who leased it back to George Barnes effective December 1st 1916 The open range country extended 4 miles (6 km) northwestward from Railroad Avenue across Brush Creek gorge until its eastern edge), bounded on three sides by townships: Midland on one side, San Angelo on one side extending into West TX beyond Brush Creek ravine boundary onto US 76 just south of White Sands Missile Range Rd., Bowie Township on another side extending into NM about 2 miles (3 km) northeastward from Railroad Ave., PropertyBanking Co.: On January 1st 1917 Barnes transferred title deed #5393 deeds/privilege agreements executed before November 5th 1916 between him & Jno 3 acres immediately northeasterly corner lot line with Brush Creek River forming easement
