Today, Groves continues to be an important center for industry and commerce with more than 50 businesses operating within its boundaries; its school system has won national awards for excellence multiple times; and its downtown is home to several major retail stores and restaurants including Riverwalk Grill & Saloon (the original location), Texaco Park Mall, and Jack n' Jill's Pancake House - among others. Groves is a town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Llano River near the Mexican border. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA. The town was founded by John Groves in 1845 as a small cattle ranch with an estimated population of 10 to 12 people. By 1860, Groves had developed into a small farming community with around 100 residents and a schoolhouse. In 1871, James Hogg established what would later become Groves as one of his early cotton plantations and began to grow corn, wheat, cotton and other crops for local markets. By 1915, Groves had reached its peak development with over 1,000 residents and two churches (the First Baptist Church and United Methodist church). However, World War I interrupted much of this growth; during that time only about 50 people lived in Grovestown while others were working on farms or serving in the military. During World War II many people from Groves relocated to serve in various munitions plants throughout Texas; however most activity took place at nearby Kerrville where production began on B-24 Liberators under contract from Boeing Airplane Company on July 15th 1944 using men recruited from Lubbock High School – then known as "The University City". With limited housing available for workers outside of Kerrville after Pearl Harbor destroyed Hiroshima's Japanese cityscape,[1] many Japanese Americans living along I-35W between Baylor University Boulevard and Loop 410 experienced first hand how difficult it was to adjust to life away from their families when they learned about America's participation in World War II.[2] The post-war years were not without struggle for locals who faced Mehlenberg vista (a land issue)[3] which saw developers purchase large tracts of prairie land east of HWY 290 for subdivisions such as Eastlake Village renamed Arlington Heights after George Romney Sr., son of former Governor George Romney who served as President pro tem during Eisenhower's second term[4], while also destroying important oak trees along Lankford Road which lined ravines used by Native American hunters centuries ago including those led by Chief Tonto whosehide Museum now stands adjacent to Harmonie Drive across from Interstate 35E/Texas State Highway 7A just east of downtown Arlington Heights today
