The first European to visit what is now Groves was Antonio de Valverde on his exploratory voyage of 1618-1619 as part of a search for a new route to Asia through the Southwest. On September 3, 1835, General Sam Houston granted Rancho San Jacinto to Daniel Boone and James Fenton for their land grant from Mexico City that extended from present day Baylor University Boulevard south to Edgecombe Road and west to Live Oak Creek and east along Live Oak Creek past present day Loop 410 (US 190). The grant also included about 12 square miles (30 km²) of land north of Rice Lake and east of I-10 in present day Bush County. In 1836, when Mexican war veteran José Joaquín Mora y Acosta bought Rancho San Jacinto from Boone & Fenton, he renamed it Santa Anna Land grants after Don Carlos Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Pavón y Costilla who had fought on the side of Spanish America against Mexico under Philip II during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). Groves began as an agricultural community with wide acreage planted with corn, cotton, beans and other crops; however during World War II many homes were destroyed by bombing raids which killed over 60% of the town's inhabitants including many men working in nearby military plants such as Dow Chemical Company or Lockheed Aircraft Corporation while others were either displaced by forced migration or died due to disease contracted during wartime conditions such as typhoid fever or polioindexed refugees brought over on ships called "Lillie Mae". About half way up Loop 410 there is a large concrete marker which says "Groves - Bombed" because most homes within bomb damage areas were destroyed before 1945 when Groves became an unincorporated community surrounded by Uniontown Naval Air Station which later became US Navy aircraft plant NAS Corpus Christi . There are several smaller memorial markers scattered throughout town bearing names such as Joe Hardy or Red Skelton in recognition of WWII veterans buried locally including local heros like Red Shoe Man who manned radar receivers atop hill near high school football field for signals interceptors during war years In 1954 Groves married its first white woman when Belle Akins moved from neighboring Uniontown into what would become her home until her death in 1978. In 1957grove accepted its new city charter which provided more services then just agriculture although many residents still worked on their farms providing milk products oranges vegetables etc.; however like much southern USA at this time race relations were still very tense with numerous black families living across county lines despite attempts made at integration started by some whites but largely thwarted by organized crime groups with links back to Jesse James . By 1990 Groves' population had fallen below 1000 residents only remaining notable rural community status Between 1960 and 2020 Grooves experienced significant demographic change with Hispanics becoming 2/3rds (of population) while African Americans decreased nearly 50%. In 1990 white flight began associated with oil industry downsizing resulting in limited job opportunities for millhands thereby decreasing tax base leave few people left following 1970s recession while Hispanic influx increased economic opportunity Demographic changes have resulted primarily in increasing poverty rates among Hispanics while African American almost tripled since 1980
