Groves is a town in northwestern El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Groves were ranching families who came from central Mexico in the 1860s. They built small cabin homes on the edge of a wash that emptied into Slaughter Creek. In 1887, John Denton platted and named this area Groves after his father-in-law's home near Glasgow in Scotland. The name stuck and today it is one of the most commonly used place names in El Paso County. The townsite was originally developed as a farming community with corn, beans, wheat, cotton and other crops being grown throughout the early years; however, by 1900 oats had become popular due to its lack of weeds or pests. By 1910 groves had become an important regional center for commerce and industry with many businesses located along Slaughter Creek including a flour mill operated by A&P grocery stores (now Kroger), several printing mills (Goudreau & Sons Publishers Company; Eller Bros., later Edwin Eller Printing Co.), two meatpacking plants ( Armour & Pritchard) and two foundries (Fenner Foundry). In 1915 Groves became one of three municipalities within El Paso County when it was created from parts of Juárez Township and Lovington Township; also included were White Sands Municipal Airport which served as an airstrip for private planes carrying goods between Juárez and El Paso until 1941 when it was closed because of World War II bombing raids; Globe Air Force Base which housed USAF bombers during World War II before becoming an army post garrisoned facility during war years; as well as portions of new Ciudad Juárez municipality that were annexed by Groves following Mexican independence from Spain on July 1st 1835. As local commerce grew there were demands for more space so in 1922Grove constructed its first large commercial building – The Village Hall – located at 4th Street and Elm Avenue across from present day First Baptist Church which still stands today on East Walnut Avenue next to Interstate 10 where most businesses now operate thanks to advances in technology such as email marketing campaigns or social media outlets like Facebook or Twitter!
