Morehead and his family moved from Huntsville, Alabama to what is now Groves after purchasing 640 acres (24 hectares) of land near the present-day town site. In 1927, John Wirthman bought 5 acres (20 square meters) of land in what is now Groves from Mr. Morehead and donated it to the town as a public park with an open space on each side measuring . The first grove was planted in 1932 and named after Mrs. Morehead’s mother: Anna Cabelgrove Grove Park(). Prior to its creation as a park, much of the original land that makes up today’s town was used for farming purposes such as cotton and hay production; however, since it became part of Groves Municipal Airport in 1955 most surface land has been developed for housing or commercial use including several shopping malls which have since closed down or been demolished.. In 1939, Harry Ladd founded Ladd Chevrolet sales operation on Main Street which became one of Midland County's largest businesses at that time with over 100 employees (). After World War II Ladd Chevrolet closed operations but reopened as an appliance store before selling its assets to Sears Holdings Corporation in 1984 (). Today Sears remains one of Midland County’s largest retail employers with more than 1,000 employees (); however Sears also operates four stores within walking distance – two located opposite each other on Main Street – within the confines of their original building which served as both their showroom and manufacturing facility until 1999 when they were moved across Interstate 35W into new facilities east off I-35W just south of FM 1414). In 2013 Sears announced they will close all but two locations by 2016 due primarily to technological advances and changing customer preferences;; however negotiations are ongoing between Sears management and local business owners about potential redevelopment or closure (i.e., beyond just store closures).
