The first Groves settlement was founded in 1871 by James H. Groves and his wife Margaret. The name "Groves" originated from a grove of trees near their farmstead, which Mr. Groves cut down to make himself a home. By 1880, the Groves family had moved to what is now downtown Groves from a location east of the current town square on Old Uvalde Road (now Seventh Street). James H."Maggie"'s death in 1887 left her five children –grove@email4ucomcast dot com – with responsibility for running their father's farmstead and providing care for their siblings as well as support for themselves and their mother during those tough years when no one could get work in Amarillo.(1) In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt visited Groves while on his way through central Texas on his historic journey across America(2). After returning to New York City, Roosevelt appointed Grove Award Winner Jens Petersen General Manager of Pan American Airways serving as its vice president(3). Pan American Airways played an important role in development of Amarillo as an important transportation hub during the early 20th century; it transported goods and passengers between major North American cities like Chicago and San Francisco.(4) After World War II ended, most agriculture fell away due to successive drought-related failures throughout much of Texas but some new industry developed including car manufacturing at Arlington Assembly Plant until it closed in 1987(5), then Litton Industries until it closed too(6). In fact many buildings that once housed industries are now used for housing or operate as businesses such as First National Bank building which fronts MainStreet mall today/came into being back when MainStreet was just US Highway 87 bisected by US Highway 89A back then called FM 1481 before getting re-name'd MainStreet after Walmart opened up along it & more recently another building next door became known locally as "The Mall". In 1984 there were plans to build a shopping mall adjacent to First National Bank but this never came to pass because developers didn't have enough money raised from various property sales necessary for the project (7). Downtown Grooves lost its commerce following Union Pacific Railroad construction along Seventh Street around 1950 resulting in job layoffs and a decline in social activity within the community which paralleled other towns across Worth County during that time period(8). With few exceptions Downtown Grooves has been abandoned since then - although some people continue live there off-grid or rent out space inside old brick warehouses converted into apartments/townhouses etc.- leaving behind an abandoned commercial district full of boarded up storefronts typical of small Midwestern towns post WWII . . . One potential solution would be redevelopment or revitalization efforts spearheaded by local business owners who see this area opportunity but currently lack greenlighted programming or funding
