The town saw a surge in development following World War II when the military constructed installations there such as Fort Bliss and Camp Nelson. In 1979, Groves became one of sixteen towns within the new Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. In 2000, it annexed neighboring Cedar Hill and Clear Creek Village together to form a single municipality with a population of over 2,000 residents. Since its incorporation into Austin–Round Rock, Groves has seen significant growth both commercial and residential. In recent years, the town has made strides towards becoming known for its unique culture and history - including hosting several events each year dedicated to celebrating local landmarks and celebrations (such as Cheerfest).
