The first post office in Greenville was established on October 12, 1814 by Wm. Haltman with James Pritchett serving as the first Postmaster-General. In 1851 Worth Ladd purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along Buffalo Bayou northeast of present-day Greenville and platted it into townsite which he named after his son William Worth Ladd Sr.. When Jasper Crain took over ownership of Baylor University starting in 1907 he donated 100 acres (40 ha) north of campus for use as an agricultural Experiment Station including a research farm known today as Rice University's Farm toMarket Shopping Center complex located adjacent to Baylor College of Veterinary Medicine campus across Buffalo Bayou from downtown Greenville... In 1912 Gertrude Earl built her home at 601 West Main Street which still stands today and served as one half of the Earl/Moses House Historic District until it was destroyed by a fire in 1978... Most notable resident during this time were Ault Connell who founded Gulf Coast Airlines; Reva Fenton Welch who operated Baylor's School for Girls; Judge Royce Stephenson who represented Vernon County before the Texas Supreme Court; Mrs. Billie Lee Baker who ran operations out of her home on Elmendorf Road until her death in 1984... In 1965 Sam Rayburn became Speaker pro tempore and majority whip under then Governor Sharpt following passage of House Bill 361 creating state government only through thegalleries financed with property tax rates collected by local governments rather than through Proposition 2 sales tax increase authorized by then Gov't Rep Don Aycock.... In 1973 Sam Rayburn married Evalyn Smith and she became Dallas' representative to Congress...... By 1982 over $1 billion had been invested within TX public education system thru bonds issue & other approaches resulting in large class sizes, layoffs & layoffs throughout state....... By 1990 enrollment at TX state universities had increased 25% above initial levels..... Before his death on May 14th 1991 aged 93 years old Sam Rayburn left behind many accomplishments including beingHouston's longest serving Speaker Pro Tempore ever..... After his death Evalyn Smith took over his mantle becomingthe second female Speaker Pro Tempore ever....... As mayor beginning with 1994 she led city government to victories against Measure HHH housing development plans which would have created more than 400 high-density housing units near Interstate 610 & I-10 exits................. With term ending December 31st 2000 she announced her candidacy for governor but lost to George W Bush..............
