In 1865–1866 (the same year that Hoodsborough County was created), Greenville merged intotx Harris County as one municipality within that new county system; accordingly, all business records were transferred to that new municipality from Houstons original store at Main & Baylor which continued to operate until 1903 (when it closed). Greenville was founded by James Bowie in 1835. The community rapidly grew and became the largest cotton town in Texas. In 1859, Greenville was renamed for General John A.F. Johnston, who had helped lead the Texan forces against Mexican troops at the Alamo. The community remained an important center of trade until it was destroyed by a fire in 1915.
