Greenville, Texas is a small city located in the US state of Texas. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city is named for John Clements Green, who donated land to become its first town in 1893. Greenville traces its roots back to 1836 when it was founded as a fur trading post by David Denton and others on the banks of the Brazos River. The post served as a supply center for settlers moving westward during the early years of Texas history. In 1861, Greenville was reincorporated as a municipality under the name of Clarksville. As annexation proceeded unchecked through 2003 through 2007 various ordinances were passed regulating business activity within annexed boundaries; however no action was taken against purported violators despite overwhelming public opposition Finally on January 1st 2009 Mayor Steve Adler announced that all annexations must be approved by City Council prior to taking effect; he did so hoping to address community concern about unaccounted annexed territory which had led some residents to riot two months earlier while protesting perceived lack of autonomy within newly annexed limits

Greenville was founded in 1837 by Major General Sam Houston and his brother, Captain John F.Houston. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location at the intersection of two important routes - the Santa Fe Trail and the Texas Road - as well as its natural resources such as cotton and cattle. In 1849, Greenville became an independent city. The first mayor was James W.Fayette, who served from 1850 to 1852. In 1860, Greenville voted to secede from Texas and become a separate state called Alabama under President Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of Secession. However, after a series of military engagements that year, Confederate forces drove the Texans out of Greenville and back into Texas on November 25th.
