In 1865, shortly before American entry into World War I, General John J.John J. Kirby set up shop here producing munitions for America during World War I.
In 1931–32 Byrd Kline Packing Company built a new mill which became known as Kirby Mill (later Kirby Industries), remains today one of America's leading manufacturer/distributors of packing materials.
In 1952–53 Exxon Corporation established an oil refinery adjacent to Kirby Mill.
In 1970 ExxonMobil merged with Mobil Oil Company forming Texaco Inc.Texaco

It is the county seat of Orange County and was founded on November 3, 1854, by surveyors working for Major General Sam Houston as part of his new territory acquisitions from Mexico. The town grew quickly due to its location along the San Antonio River, which provided access to Indian Territory and other ranching country. By 1880, Greenville had a railroad station and began to become known as a transportation hub for the area. In 1907, Greenville became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and City Council system under which it governs itself through a Board of Commissioners. The history of Greenville begins with its founding date - November 3rd 1854 - when surveyors working for Major General Sam Houston came across land that would later become Orange County. At first glance it may have seemed like an easy task to make this purchase - there were already settlers present in what is now Orange County! But because of its location along the San Antonio River (a key transportation artery), Greenville quickly became known as one of Texas' most important towns – not only because it had convenient access to everything within reach but also because it was considered one of the most progressive cities in America during its time period! In 1850, violence erupted between Mexican colonists living in Comal County and American settlers who had arrived eastward overland from Missouri – something that still echoes through our community today! Despite this incident taking place close by (just two miles away), both sides were relatively peaceful until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Texas from Louisiana under President Abraham Lincoln’s orders! Because so many people lived near Mexico City at that time, many Texans didn't understand why their southern neighbor was fighting against their own government – until they saw combat! Thousands died in what's known as “the great Texan war” – including many innocent civilians who were caught up in battle ( such as John Nolen). Thankfully though, soon after hostilities ended following Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865; all citizens were given amnesty by Emperor Napoleon III! Although Dark Age times have been described by some historians as difficult due to scarce resources and social unrest; Greenville nonetheless experienced some dramatic moments during these years including: 1892-1905: Black Gold Rush began around town & led to rapid growth into major center for cotton production; extreme poverty & crime Flint Hills Rd NW area developed rapidly becoming very dangerous (& expensive) due largely to open settlement & lack thereof police protection
