Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Houston metropolitan area. It was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a post office named Greenville on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The name "Greenville" originated from an oak tree that grew near the present-day city limits. The first settler, James McMillan, reported seeing "a green bayou flowing through our town." In 1837, Major General Antonio Laredo and his army marched through Greenville on their way to fight Mexico. A large crowd gathered around the fortifications prepared for battle, but when Laredo arrived he ordered them to disperse and continue their march. Aftermath of the Mexican War brought many new settlers to Greenville and it became known as one of the most important centers of Irish American culture in Texas during this time period. In 1865, at age 21 years old McMillan was elected Mayor of Greenville after winning a runoff against incumbent John Gorman (1811-65). He served two terms before retiring due to health issues at age 74 years old. In 1870–71 Simeon Price built what is now City Hall on Third Street in downtown Greenville. In 1881 Price donated land off Elm Street east of First Avenue for use as a public square where citizens could come together to transact business or listen to lectures sponsored by local colleges or churches. On November 2nd, 1881, Brownlow Hunt organized what is now Clear Lake Baptist Church in downtown Greenville with Revs Wm Hays (1809-85), Denton Mclaughlin (baptist minister) and Lewis Jarrell (deacon) serving as its first pastors
