Greenville is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gregg County. The name "Greenville" was first given to the community by General Sam Houston in 1836 as part of his plan to rename all of Gregg County after himself. Greenville was founded on November 3, 1878 by J.B. Richardson and Wm. Hargrave as an agricultural center on the banks of Buffalo Bayou near what is now downtown Greenville. At its peak, Greenville had a population of 1,500 people and contained two factories - one for making shoes and another for making saddles - but these businesses closed shortly thereafter because of competition from nearby Dallas and Fort Worth. The affliction that took over much of Texas in 1907 became known as "the Great Depression."
