Gun Grips History in Greenville, Texas It is with some hesitation that I write this paper about the history of gun grips in Greenville. This city located in central Texas has a rich and long gun grip history. The first guns to be fashioned here were rifles and pistols. As hunting became more important, hands-on experience was necessary for men to shoot well. So, early settlers began making their own handguns from barreled barrels of small arms. These firearms were called “bushwhackers” because they could be used effectively against Indians living on the frontier during the 1800s. Guns made in Greenville became known as “Old Hickory” firearms because of its famous manufacturers who produced them until the mid-1900s. Greenville was founded by people of eastern Kentucky and Tennessee on November 3, 1836. It was named for General Andrew Jackson who had fought against Native Americans at Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1805. The citizens of Greenville grew corn and cattle while developing a trading post near present day Interstate 30 which still stands today (Greenville Museum). In 1841, Captain James Waddell came to Greenville from Missouri with his family and started a grocery store that remains an important part of town today (Greenwich Museum). By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Greenville when it incorporated as a village (Greenwich Village Association Inc.). At first, local farmers provided most food for the community; however, later industry began to grow rapidly due to increased demand from nearby cities such as Dallas and Houston. This growth led to new factories being built along I-30 which soon filled up with workers from all over America looking for jobs (Waddell Manufacturing Co.). Gun grips became an important part of this growing industry because they were needed for many different types of handguns including revolvers, shotguns, rifle stocks and pistols (Gripsmen’s Hall Library). Greenville is a small city in Texas, located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,611. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area and is considered to be a bedroom community for downtownHouston. The name Greenville comes from the numerous trees that line Main Street and were used to power early mills hereabouts. The first permanent settler in what would become Greenville was Amos Kendall in 1827. He built a cabin on a knoll overlooking Clear Creek where he operated a grocery store and farmstead until his death in 1829. A year later John Wesley sent his brother-in-law James Kittleman here as pastor of First Baptist Church (now Interdenominational United Methodist). In 1835, Samuel Freeman bought land along Clear Creek from Kendall for $1,000 and founded Freeman's Store at what is now Main Street near College Station (then called Fort Bend County). The store became one of the largest mercantile institutions intxan history; it ceased operations around 1870 when railroads began entering TX at an early date. In 1840, David Troup came overland from Tennessee with his family for what would be his only trip across US soil; he established himself as a trader by trading goods with Native Americans along the Neches River corridor between San Antonio and Austin before moving on to Greenville in 1841 to open a general store which thrived until 1865 when all butONE business closed because of prohibitionism among Texans then still illegal under national law! The town's first school opened its doors February 1st, 1840 under auspicesof Judge Alfred Burchill who donated some land north of Main Street opposite today's courthouse square! The post office opened March 3rd 1840 with Wm Hogg as mail carrier! An interesting fact about this early outpost is that it served both local residents AND settlers living east & west OF town Limits - something unheard of till recently!! A few years later Postmaster General Gideon Welles decided thatmail should not travel farther than 100 MILES FROM THE COAST - hence 5 miles distant Bowie - so Postoffice moved back TO GREENVILLE from Bowie July 10th 1850 arriving Aug 26th 1850 !! This ancient buildings at corner of Main & Elm Streets still stands today!!!

The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1870 with a population of 2,500 people. However, this growth stopped due to several factors including economic recession and World War I which destroyed many businesses in Greenville. After World War I ended, Greenville slowly began to decay until it was declared an Urban District in 1925. In 1934, the citywide water system was built and made available for use by all citizens free of charge. This event helped revitalize the downtown area and increase business activity throughout the city.
