The first European to visit what is now Greenville was Portuguese explorer Ruy Lopes de Mesquita in 1541. He named it "Nova Iguaçu" (New Iguiça). In 1836, Major General George Biddle founded Fort Bend County and named it for him, after General James K. Polk who had evacuated Texas during the Mexican-American War. Greenville grew rapidly due to cotton plantations and post office development starting in 1856. The first railroad reached town in 1870, making it easier for farmers to get goods to market. The Houston & Gulf Railroad arrived in 1897 and connected Greenville with Houston and other cities on the south side of the Brazos River. This allowed for heavy industry growth including shipbuilding, engineering firms, meatpacking plants, and a large aircraft factory which produced Curtiss planes until World War II. After World War II ended, industry progressively withered away as new technologies replaced older ones; however, Greenville still has several notable businesses such as SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) and All American Incorporated which are still headquartered there today
