In 1849, General James Kountze divided his army into two columns—the north column under Captains John Sledge and George Armstrong Custer; and the south column under Major general David Hunter—and set out for Greenville on horseback to take possession. On reaching the river, they discovered that their first objective was Fort Gibson—a fortification built by General Osage Indian chief Pontotoc to defend against an American invasion force led by Andrew Jackson that had come downriver from St Louis via Lakeview during winter 1850–51JKM

In 1890, when Galveston Bay became an international port for trade with other parts of the world including Europe and Asia (the first such center in this area), Greenville became one of its most important commercial ports with over 100 warehouses and $1 million worth of exports per year. During World War II, Greenville played a key role in manufacturing munitions for both American forces fighting overseas and Japanese forces attacking Pearl Harbor; it produced more than any other city in the country. In 1945-1946 during occupation by Japan following World War II; many businesses fled to America but many remain today including Rice University's largest business incubation program "Rice StartupCorp." which has since grown into one of Houston's leading technology companies In 1957-1959 when Interstate 10 bypassed downtownHouston making room for what would become Redevelopment Authority's old municipal courthouse on Main Street renamed Central Library which still stands today hosting events likeakespeare performances etc., much discussion took place about whether or not to move City Hall to make way for a shopping mall but ultimately no action was taken until 1997 when then Mayor Art Acevedo announced his plan to redevelop Central Library into an office park called 'Central Park'. After two years' extensive public hearings throughout Houston he finally approved moving City Hall to Central Park pending further study which never happened due to funding problems however several private organizations have since moved into City Hall vacated by their predecessors making it once again living history Despite this somewhat sad story about how little progress has been made regarding redevelopment & city hall relocation over 20 years ago; overall Greensvilians generally support Mayor Acevedo's vision for developing Central Library into an iconic mixed use complex known locally simply as 'Central Park'.
