Greenville is a small city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,830 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Greenville is located on the Red River. The first settlers in what is now Greenville were men from Kentucky who came to this area in 1836. They built a cabin and named it "New Hope." In 1840, two brothers, Isaac and George Washington Hilliard established a wagon trail that led from Lubbock to New Hope and then down the Red River to Greensboro (now Fort Worth). On December 12, 1840, they sold their holdings to A.J. Beattie for $2,000 dollars (). In 1851-1853 four families moved into what is now Greenville: John Gentry ( father of John W.), James Sitton ( son of James Sitton), William Fenton ( uncle of William Fenton) and Mary Addison Dickey (). The town site was surveyed by Captain Haskell riding over Indian trails on his horse "Haviland". The home at present day First Baptist Church was built there in 1853 by Obadiah Richardson as one of six homes he purchased from Captain Haskell. Mr. Richardsons daughter married David Browning about 1857; that marriage produced thirteen children who lived in the town until after World War II when most left for better opportunities overseas. Captain Haskell's house served as the first courthouse in Greenville – constable George Prentice held court here from March 3rd until October 20th each year between 1851-1854 while residing at Beatties House on Elm Street near today's State Capitol building #821 across Elm Street from where US Highway 181 branches just before entering downtown which became I-30 shortly thereafter In 1865 Colonel Edwin Jealous bought land east of current day Main Street opposite Post Office Square NW corner Drury Lane NW including future Broadway Theatre thenceforth known as Colored Theatre with its own stagecoach stop called 'The Negro Theater' continuing through 1935 when used by several movie theaters actually one theater running all three sides Broadway etc coming back to live close enough so we could visit said theater during our long drives home throughout much later When Postmaster General James Hogg arrived Greenville had only 2 stores along with 1 post office it also had no telephone or mail service so all letters went through Captains Haskell & Richardsons store which continued functioning until 1969 when phone lines were added
