Greenville is a small town located in Walker County, Texas. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Walker County and has a population of 4,321 as of the 2014 census. Greenville is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to come to what is now Greenville was Antonio Daria in 1827. He founded a trading post on the Arkansas River near present day Wichita Falls, then named Fort Gibson after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Mexico at San Jacinto in 1836. From here he sold goods up the river and made connections with settlers in Kansas and Missouri before coming back downriver to start his own trading post at what is now Greenville on October 9, 1837. In 1840 David Lane moved from Dallas to start a new cotton plantation just east of present-day Greenville. His daughter Lydia married Isaac Goodloe Sr., one of three men who took over Lane's plantation when he died in1860. Goodloe became one of the largest landowners in Red River Parish until his death in 1930s.. This village had an early impetus due to cattle drives that brought farmers into Red River Parish for marketting their animals along the Trinity River for sale by local merchants such as Wm Atherton and James McNaught.. This commerce spawned several stores including G H & S Cattle Co (founded 1865), E M Leather Goods (founded 1870), L N Boot Manufacturing Co (founded 1886), P B Flour Mills (opened 1889) and J F Biddle Plastics Incorporated (opened 1903). In 1907 United States Rubber Company opened its plant adjacent to current day Walmart Supercenter there which continues today as Walmart Cherokee Open Space. At this time there were also several churches including First Baptist Church (1888), Methodist Church(1891) and Presbyterian Church(1896). All these churches helped support community development activities such as lending facilities for school children, providing social services such as health care and womens' auxiliary work during this period when transportation was not easy or affordable so people had to rely on themselves for basic needs like food and shelter

The first post office in Greenville opened in 1837. In 1847, the Texas Railroad Company built a line through the community and gave it its present name of the Houston-Galveston Railway. By 1870, Greenville had a population of 1,500. It experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s due to agricultural production and other businesses such as grocery stores and livery services becoming established. A cotton gin was constructed in 1899 and became an important center of production for the region. However, heavy industry failed to take hold in Greenville during the 20th century and it slowly declined until it ceased operations in 2000.
