Grapevine is a town in Kleberg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,809 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grapevine was founded by Captain John Waddell and his men on December 5, 1859 as a post office called "Waco". The first white settlers in the area were Captain John Waddell and his men who came overland from Wichita Falls in 1858. The town site was chosen for its strategic location midway between Austin and Round Rock. By 1865, grapevines had been found to be a valuable source of juice for southern Texans and early fruits for market were also produced here including figs, apples, pears, plums and grapes. In 1868 James Hogg arrived from Ohio with his family to take up land grants near present day Houston. He named his new home "Grapevine" after the grapevine which he had seen growing wild near Wichita Falls. In 1896 when Interstate 10 was built through Kleberg County it passed through Grapevine on its way south to Lubbock. As a result of this highway development traffic increased so much that the Post Office moved into what is now known as Old Main Street in 1907 where it remains today (although portions have been replaced with modern facilities). At this time there were only two stores in Grapevine; one operated by Acker & Grimes Bros., located on Elm Street east of MainStreet while the other store (owned by Gillett Bros.) operated on Spring Streets west of Elmhurst Avenue. In 1911 Drury's Drug Store was opened at 9th Street and Congress Ave., just across from current day Baylor University campus north side main entrance/exit street from I-10 Westbound on Capitol Avenue North). After World War II many farmers bought property along I-10 because it would provide them with easy access to markets in Mexico City as well as points northward such as Dallas or Houston
The first known grapevine in Texas was found in 1828, near the present day town of Pharr. The grapevine grew rapidly and soon spread to other parts of the state. By 1851, grapevines were found in every county in Texas. The vine quickly became a popular source of wine and brandy.
