In 1839, Jules Bourque planted grapevines on a property that he leased from John Waddell for $1 per acre (0.50 per mile). By 1840, Bourque had increased the size of his vineyard to 200 acres with 8 miles of railroad tracks leading to it from townsite (now Grapevine). The first wine made in Grapevine was called White Claret and was sold by Bourque and others at a warehouse on Railroad Avenue near Slaughter Road. It was not until 1863 that Gaultier opened his own winery here which became world renowned for its red wine barrels filled with Mourvedre sparkling wine

The city was founded by John Sexton and his wife Anna on November 12, 1881 as a small farming community known as "Grapevine." The original name for Grapevine was simply "Grapevine". In 1914, the town changed its name to "Wilson" after George W. Williamson, then-governor of Texas. In 1936, the town again changed its name to "Grapevine" after James Fenton Wright became mayor. Wright's father had also been born in Grapevine and died there in 1918. John Sexton founded Grapevine during those early days when farmers still relied heavily on horse power to do farm work. Today grapevines are an important part of local culture and economy; they are used to make wine or cider and their fruit is often eaten fresh or dried for snack or use in jams and jellies.
