Today, grape farming continues to be an important aspect of local economy with several fruit orchards being operated along with some smaller wineries producing wine under different names including: Zinfandel Vineyards (Zinfandel), Shiraz Winery (Shiraz), Cabernet Sauvignon Winery (Cabernet Sauvignon), Marsanne Winery (Marsanne) and Noel’s Wines (Noel’s).
On November 8, 1876, a group of Texans gathered at the old Santa Fe Trail junction to form the Texas Republican Party. The party was founded by James K. Polk with the goal of keeping slavery out of Texas and supporting western interests. The party won two state legislatures in 1877 before losing support from both the Ulysses S. Grant administration and eastern businessmen. In 1879, they merged with the Democratic Party to create the Lone Star Party. The party lost power after Reconstruction ended in Texas in 1883.
