In addition to its significance as a transportation hub, grapevines also played an important role in the development of grape culture in Texas. A large percentage of the wine produced in Texas is based on grape vines, which are used primarily for red wine production.

It was named for General Sam Houston, who had been elected president of the Republic of Texas in 1845 and had led a successful campaign to secede from Mexico.
