Grapevine is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Grapevine has been inhabited by humans since pre-historic times. The first European settlers arrived in 1836 and named the settlement after their vineyards near Paris, France. The post office was established in 1857 and the first school was built in 1861. There were no railroads in Hidalgo County when it was created in 1907, so grape growers shipped their product to various towns throughout the county on horseback or wagon trains. In 1933, Grapevine incorporated as a municipality and began to build its present day infrastructure including a public library, high school (now known as John Jay High School), water tower and fire station. The early years of Grapevine’s history were difficult for many reasons: lack of irrigation system; local Indian resistance to white encroachment; difficulty getting federal funding for projects such as schools or roads; drought conditions that left crops unplanted during bad years; and finally an oil well blowout that destroyed part of the cityscape in 1947 which led to increased development around the area
The early history of Grapevine, Texas is a bit blurry. There are some references to the area being inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in the 18th century. The first European to settle in Grapevine was José de Aranda, who arrived in 1795. He and his family were the first people to purchase land that would later become Grapevine County. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased 2,000 acres of land east of present-day Grapevine from Pedro Tejanos. This property would form the nucleus of what is now Houston County. The following year, Houston donated 1,500 more acres to create Trinity County. In 1840, John Kirby bought 5,000 acres southeast of present-day Grapevine and developed it into Kirbyville. This area became known as Kirbytown today. On December 8, 1845, President James Kenedy issued an executive order creating San Antonio County with its current boundaries including parts ofHouston and Galveston Counties as well as a small part of Austin County (which included Austin). The order also divided Trinity and Houston Counties into two sections – Brazoria and Harris – so that cotton could be grown more efficiently in one place rather than having to be shipped around both counties for sale purposes. Grapevine began growing rapidly after this initial dedication to farming by settlers. By 1850, there were over 100 homes built in what is now Grapevine City Limits. The town's growth continued through the 1800s until it reached its peak during the 1860s when it had over 2200 residents living within its walls! During this time period grape production also grew significantly due to advances in irrigation technology which allowed vines to grow at high densities without needing fertile ground or water resources
