This program helped establish both local businesses as well as new residents who would help fill in any gaps in local infrastructure while creating new employment opportunities. Today, CDC continues its role as an important player in downtown Grapevine through initiatives like job fairs/ Workshops for Youth (WFY), artscape programming, grantmaking, and partnerships with other agencies like USAID or HUD

Grapevine, Texas is a small city located in Republican Webb County, Texas. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Grapevine was founded in 1885 by Captain James M. Fenton and his family. The first store in Grapevine was opened by Captain Fenton and his wife Anna on North Second Street. In 1886, the town had a population of seventy-six people and it became an agricultural center due to its location next to the Brazos River. In 1912, George Wickersham bought a tract of land east of Grapevine from Captains Fenton and Wickersham named it Fenton Ranch after himself. The ranch became known as the largest sugar beet plantation inTexas before it was sold to J. Parnell Hogg in 1916 for $5 million dollars. In 1927, Hogg donated two properties totaling over one hundred acres west of downtown Grapevine to the University of Texas at Austin for use as a research campus called UT Arlington Annex (later renamed UT Austin). In 1930, UT Arlington Annex merged with UT Austin’s College Station campus to form the University of Texas at Austin which continues today as one of America’s leading universities with more than 100 campuses nationwide including one in each state (Delaware and Maine). In 1942, during World War II, grapevines were used as fuel for fighter planes flying over Japan because they could provide minimal smoke signals against night fighter aircraft flying overhead. The local economy slowly began to revive during the 1990s when new entertainment venues such as walmart and AMC theaters opened up along I-10 near Springboro; this along with advancesotechnology has led to newer factories being built within walking distance of both downtown Grapevine and north side arterial streets like University Boulevard where technological companies have been established such as AMD (a processor manufacturer) and Schneider Electric AG (a home energy provider). In 1837, a group of Texans purchased 1,500 acres of land about twenty miles northeast of Austin in what is now Grapevine. They named the land San Jacinto and began to grow grapes. The first grape vines were planted in 1839. By 1850, production had increased so much that they had to build a winepress to process the grapes. The press was completed in 1852 and the first bottles of good-quality Texas wine were produced.
