Bryan named it after General Houston because he felt that no other Texan could give an adequate account for driving Mexico out of North America. In 1849 Congress passed a bill authorizing annexation of all surrounding counties into Texas; on February 1st 1850 Grand Prairie became part of Dallas County and incorporation began on March 2nd. The first post office opened in Grand Prairie on April 14th, 1850. As dry weather made travel difficult to maintain crops or send goods overland to market, wagon trains carrying flour started arriving from Illinois every week in late 1850/early1851; this led to grandiose predictions about how much larger Fort Worth would have become if not for its rival's success at becoming an American metropolis overnight - with some even proclaiming that Fort Worth should be renamed "Hollywood". Construction began later that year on what would become known as White Settlement - a long strip of land running east-west bisecting downtownDallas along Military Road (now US Highway 6). Over time various businesses were built along White Settlement Boulevard including Masonic Lodge #1 (built 1865), First National Bank (1876), Wacoaland Manufacturing Company (1887) and others until construction stopped around 1915 when World War I intervened and production shifted inland towards Arlington Heights where it continued until 1942 when bombing destroyed most business buildings downtown which forced closure of White Settlement Boulevard between Elmhurst Avenue southbound and University Drive northbound effective June 15th 1941 although some buildings still survive today as Wheaton Plaza Shopping Center & Red Lobster restaurant
