At that time, it consisted of only a few houses and a post office. The first mayor was Wm. Elisha George and the first clerk was Rufus Fenton. The population grew slowly until World War II when it reached over 20,000 people due in large part to military housing constructed at nearby Fair Park during that war. After the war ended, growth slowed again until 1990 when construction began on what is now downtown Grand Prairie as part of a $1 billion project called “Downtown Dallas 2020” which involved demolishing many buildings within downtown Dallas and replacing them with new ones designed for Morehead City-style shopping malls and office complexes. Growth resumed after DowntownDallas2020’s completion but has been slow since thendue in part to competition from newer developments around town such as MidtownDallas which has replaced much of downtownGrand prairie as well as suburban development near Interstate 10 In recent years there have been efforts made by some residents of downtownGrand prairieto revive their traditional businesses such as local grocery stores along with new development around town including MidtownDallas which has replaced much of downtownGrand prairieas well as suburban development near Interstate 10such as Heritage Village
In 1834, the first white settlers in what is now Grand Prairie were two families from Illinois. The area was part of the Mexican Province of Texas and had been under Spanish rule for over a century. In 1834, Mexico ceded Texas to the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. The U.S. government divided Texas into northern and southern halves, and Grand Prairie fell within the southern half. When it became clear that slavery would not be allowed in Texas after its admission into the Union, Congress passed an act in November 1845 giving land to free blacks in Grand Prairie as well as other areas in southcentral Texas. The town was founded on November 17,1846 by John Witherspoon and his brother Jameson Witherspoon with $5 per acre (about $140 today).
