Grand Prairie is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,644 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Tarrant County and the second-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Grand Prairie was John Nolen in 1836. By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in poverty on a tract of land that eventually became part of Grand Prairie Township. In 1854, surveyor James Aikens laid out a town site on land donated by General William Worth and it began to grow slowly but steadily throughout the 1850s and 1860s as cotton plantations grew around it. In 1870, when Austin’s incorporation into Texas created a new political entity called Travis County, most of what would become Grand Prairie went with it. At first glance, this might appear to be an injustice – after all, Austin had more people and more businesses than any other municipality within Travis County! However, because Austin was small (only 5 square miles), its businesses didn’t have much impact on grand prairies growth until later years when larger cities began to form. By 1880, however, enough residents had moved into Grand Prairie for town officials to start considering annexing surrounding rural communities like Denton and Arlington Heights. On December 1 of that year (1880), annexation proceedings were started for what would come to be known as “Downtown” or “Old Town” – including parts of today’s Little Elm and Midtown neighborhoods; Today’s downtown is home to many large businesses such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., AT&T Park MLB baseball stadium (home of the Dallas Stars) and Dillard University College Campus). Downtown annexed much of present-day Midtown before finally reaching today’s boundaries just west of I-30/35W Airport Blvd./US Highway 290E about 30 years ago! Aikens Place: This designation goes back to 1888 when James Aiken subdivided lots along Broadway near Presentation Drive which served as streets leading into Old Town from Downtown during early morning hours while stores were open during afternoon hours giving citizens quick access without having to go through Downtown - making this one of earliest examples of shopping malls! As annexation continued onto other adjacent townships over time Downtown gradually lost its importance until 1905 when it completely disappeared under development according to plans put forth by then Mayor Hargrave who designated it Market Square instead naming various roads after merchants from early history including Judge Samuel Brown Mower Sr., Jno Hargrave (father), Abram Henderson (grandson) etc…..Today's Old Town boundaries are located just east Of I30/35W Airport Boulevard/US Highway 290E
