While binocularity remained a key component of many American lives until after World War II, it wasn’t until the early 21st century that true high-quality Binocular Telescopes began becoming available on the market worldwide (although they are not currently manufactured anywhere in North America). Today IOR continues to produce world-class binoculars at its Grand Prairie headquarters.

The city was founded in 1881 by Austin businessmen John Fenton and Edgar Thomson as a small trading post on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1902, Grand Prairie became an official town, and in 1912 it was renamed after Houstonian general James Longstreet to honor him for his achievements during World War I. In 1936, Grand Prairie incorporated as a municipality with its own government and municipal services. The city's population peaked at 150,000 in 1960 but has since declined modestly due to suburbanization and other factors. By 2000, Grand Prairie's population had fallen below 100,000 for the first time since 1980; however, recent growth has returned it to around 120,000 residents by 2014. Grand Prairie is located in southern Polk County on Interstate 35W between Dallas and Houston. It is bordered to the north by Willowbrook Village-Langley Park neighborhood on Willowbrook Drive; to the east by Midway Hills subdivision; to the south by Clear Lake Heights subdivisions (a suburb appellation that includes much of downtown); and to the west by White Oak Trailer Park subdivision (inland from downtown). According to2010 census data,[1] Grand Praire has an area of 509 square miles (1,500 km2), ranking it 61st largest out of 1 million municipalities nationwide.[2] The climate here varies greatly according season: summer highs average 85°F (29°C) while winter lows are about 32°F (−0°C). Summertime thunderstorms are common along many parts of this large metropolitan area which often brings down powerlines so severe that people have been known not only to leave their homes but also cut off drinking water supplies because they could not turn off taps! Spring rains bring life back into many areas that were long dry including trees getting new roots systems due again to groundwater recharge[3].

The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders who came in 1692. The first permanent settler in what is now Grand Prairie was James Hogg in 1837. He founded the town of Hogg on the banks of the river he called "Grand River". The name stuck, and Hogg became one of the most important towns in central Texas for many years. In 1875, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped much of present-day Wyoming and Colorado while working for the United States Geological Survey (USGS). As part of his survey work, he passed through Grand Prairie on July 4th, 1875 – becoming one of its earliest residents. In 1902, USGS colleague George Armstrong Custer died at Fort Washakie near present-day Wichita Falls; his body was never found and there is no evidence that he ever traveled to or visited Grand Prairie. This event helped start a legend that suggests Custer may have been buried hereabouts – though this theory has yet to be proven true. In 1918, when World War I started, local farmers raised chickens using an old coop they had acquired from a neighbor's farmstead during WWI conflict time. When war ended and prices for eggs plummeted due to lack demand from civilians (due largely to rationing),the farmer decided not to sell anymore eggs because he thought people would stop eating them if they knew there were no more wars coming! In fact, over time grocery stores all around began stocking pre-packaged eggs again because people could not abstain from eating meat during wartime restrictions). That same year also saw grand opening by then Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ home stadium “Cowboy Stadium” just east off HWY 183/I-35W between Grand Prairie Blvd./Highway 6W & Elmhurst Rd./Shreveport Rd., about midway between downtown Dallas &Shreveport AFB
