The town began as a small agricultural community with just 10 residents in 1840 when John Wessel arrived from Missouri with his family and built a log cabin near present day Interstate 35W and State Highway 183. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in what would become Grand Prairie proper including 30 farmers and 60 merchants; this growth was due to two factors: 1) Wessel offered free land to anyone who erected a permanent residence within one year of settlement, 2) Wessel's connections with fellow Missourians who had relocated to Texas during the Mexican War led him to invest heavily in early development hereabouts
In 1845, the town of Grand Prairie was founded by John F. Mclntyre and his wife, Cynthia. The town was named after General George Washington's capital and mission in what is now Arlington County, Virginia. In 1869, the Central Texas Railway built a line from Grand Prairie to Fort Worth. The railroad allowed businessmen and farmers to sell goods and services directly to consumers in Fort Worth without having to go through larger cities such as Dallas or Wichita Falls. This helped spur economic development in the area and made Grand Prairie one of the most important center for commerce in central Texas. In 1924, the city of Grand Prairie was annexed by Dallas.
