Glenn Heights is located in the Hill Country of central Texas and straddles both East and West Mesahamcis counties. The first settlers to Glenn Heights were prospectors who traveled up the Brazos River valley in search of new land to farm. Their truckloads of artifacts from their travels were collected and stored at what is now the Glenn Heights Museum. In 1881, two brothers, John and George O’Neill, bought 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land just east of present-day Glen Rose Avenue from David Lyle for $5 per acre ($= ). They named their settlement after General James Fenton's home village on the opposite bank of the Brazos River in Kaufman County, Texas - Glenn Heights being short form for "Fenton's Bend". At that time there were no stores or phone lines in this area so people had to communicate with one another using Indian words which they would share by shaking hands before summoning an animal like a buffalo or deer to carry messages back and forth between them (later horses would also be used). In 1922, Dr. Jock Elliott established his medical practice at Glen Rose Avenue and other early residents helped him build a clinic/hospital on property that still stands today known as Elliott Hospital Annex. In 1935, President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Eagle Ford Oil Field where he toured various oil fields including those near Glen Rose Avenue where he attended a meeting about developing new oil resources within Texas; during this visit He ordered General Hite to begin development work on wildcat wells at Glen Rose Ave., which began shortly thereafter! This led directly to Waco Tx becoming part of the Lone Star State! The post office was opened in 1923 and closed its doors in 1960 due to lack of mail traffic but its remnants can still be seen today along East MesahamcisCounty Rd., just south of GlenRoseAvenue! Glenn Heights experienced some hard times during World War II with many families leaving because they couldn't support themselves war-time style but things eventually turned around when local businessmen became involved with importation/export businesses such as fishing companies etc.; some very successful local entrepreneurs such as Bud Fry served valuable roles during this difficult period . After World War II ended things slowly stabilized as more people settled down here ..... although most residents are self-employed farmers & ranchers currently!. Some good examples include: Roy Boyd who started IHOP restaurant originally called 'Buddy's BBQ' then moved it across country finally closing it down Miami Nd Houston tx; Donny Kiser who owns & operates Donny's Grill restaurant chain & satellite locations throughout TX; Gene Hackman who ran several grocery stores starting with 'Genny's Grocery' then transferred operations into his son Dan's business name 'Hackman Foods'; Bob Cogswell who operated several small convenience stores over many years later sold it all& closure occurred w/o any notice... ; Vernon Smith founder & original owner (and longest serving mayor)of Smith Air Force Base adjacent airport.. ......etc
