The community was first settled in 1885 by Irish immigrants. In 1912, Glenn Heights became a municipality. The post office has been in operation since 1914 and the ZIP code for Glenn Heights is 76208. In 1950, Coca-Cola began production at its plant on Elmendorf Road in Glenn Heights. In 1967, PepsiCo moved its manufacturing operations to Glen Heights from Parkland, Texas after Slade Parks Inc., which owned and operated the Parkland Coke Bottling Company, bought Area Dairy Products Corporation's assets and merged with PepsiCo's United States division. From 1992 until 2003, North American Aviation manufactured jets at its facility on Elmendorf Road in Glenn Heights; however these operations were discontinued after North American announced it would close its Arlington headquarters and move all of its jobs to Mexico City effective January 1, 2003. On May 15th of that year residents voted 3-2 to annex their current village into larger Dallas County through an election held pursuant to Section 5 of Texan Statute § 204 (a). The annexation amendment ordinance stated that "the boundaries of this Village shall be as follows: Beginning at an intersection points defined by 12161 Elmendorf Rd./Klein Rd./Utah Ave./Glenn Hts Parkway/UCLA Rd./Klein Rd., thence north along 12161 Elmendorf Rd./Klein Rd./Utah Ave./Glenn Hts Parkway/UCLA Rd., east along Klein Rd., south along UCLA Blvd., then west along 12161 Elmendorf Rd./Klein Rd./Utah Ave/. The Village shall have full voting rights." On November 8th 2002 Mayor Tom Curran signified official annexation with an incorporation proclamation stating "Welcome Home! Welcome ToGLENN HeIGHTS! We hope you enjoy your new home as much as we do!" Famed composer Claude Debussy lived briefly in Glen Heights during his final years before dying there on July 17th 1904 aged 66 years old while visiting family near Methodist Church on Maple Lawn Drive #3Nd NW Houston TX 77027

Glenn Heights is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. Glenn Heights was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1885. The first post office in Glenn Heights was established in 1886. The community name comes from the Glencairn Hills above which the Irish settlers built their homes while they awaited passage to America on the boat "Glencairn". The residents of Glen Heights took up various fishing and agricultural pursuits until 1889, when a railroad station was constructed and served as their primary source of income. In 1896, local Hardware Store owner John Caughey donated land for a public school district; this school would become known as Glenn Heights High School. In 1902, oil wells were drilled near Glenn Heights and began production; however, due to oil price fluctuations and lack of infrastructure, these wells did not result in significant economic development for the community until after World War I when automobiles became popularly available and businesses grew around gasoline salesplaces. This period also saw new construction such as a Methodist Church (1912) and a Jewish synagogue (1914). After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, many Japanese Americans who had fled Hiroshima returned home including some who had settled in Glenn Heights where they raised children with American citizens living there during that time period. In 1951 TWA Airport opened just east of town boundaries providing air travel opportunities for locals and tourists alike; early morning flights would depart from Terminal 3 continuing into downtown Houston while evening flights departed directly over Hobby Airport serving metropolitanHouston area residents until 1981 when Terminal 4 reopened following an $8 million renovation project that included expansion of taxiways 9/11 original Runway 09L/27R were renamed I-10 & I-610 becoming both runways 9L/27R & JFKrespectively making it one large airport well within driving range of most Texans making it one today’s “Gateway to Houston” economically speaking simply by virtue of its location! With all that has changed since then not only have prices for groceries increased but so have property values hereabouts!
