Gun targets have been a part of the history and culture of Glenn Heights, Texas for many years. The first target was constructed in 1892 by J.B. Burch and Sons, a firearms manufacturer. Gun targets were also used at the local fairgrounds until the late 1800s. In 1907, J.C. Nichols founded Nichols Targets, which became one of the largest target manufacturers in Texas. Today, Nichols Targets remains a family-owned business with over 100 employees worldwide who produce classic sporting rifles and shotguns as well as handgun targets and airguns. In 1913, Mayor John Wesley Hardin dedicated an additional shooting field to be used by the city police department on Boulevard Road west of town. This was known as “The Green Patch” because it was located next to a green farm field on which Riflemen Reserve had gathered firewood for their guns during World War I (1914-18). After World War I ended, The Green Patch was converted into an outdoor range that continued to be used by the city police department until it closed in 1972 due to pollution concerns from nearby Interstate 10 (I-10). In 1978, Glenn Heights established its own rifle and shotgun ranges within walking distance of each other on Neches River Parkway east of town limits. These ranges remain open today and are one of the most popular locations for training law enforcement officers across Texas and around the world! In 2007, Glenn Heights opened its own indoor range that is still operational today!

The Glenn Heights Massacre took place on December 14, 1938, when twelve people were killed and twenty-four others were injured when the gun of one of the victims was accidentally discharged.

Glenn Heights is located on State Highway 288, east of I-610 and south of U.S. Highway 59. The Glenn Heights shopping center was built in 1957 and contains over 100 stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, Sears again and Kmart as well as aanger general store and a post office. The community also includes two churches - First Baptist Church which has been in operation since 1892 and Second Baptist Church which was organized in 1922. Two elementary schools are also located within the town limits; Glenbrook Elementary School served students until 2003 when it merged with neighboring Humble ISD to form Humble Independent School District No. 2 (HISD No 2). According to the United States Census Bureau, Glenn Heights has a total area of , all of it land.

However, since the 1990s, Glenn Heights has seen significant decline due to population loss and economic recession. As of 2013, the town had only 1 full-time employee and 4 part-time employees.

Glenn Heights was founded in 1884 by John S. Glenn and his wife, Emmeline H. Glenn. The city was named for John S. Glenn, the first American to be elected as a U.S. senator from Massachusetts. The Glenn familyowned and operated a sawmill in the town until 1925. In 1916, the Glenn family donated land to build an elementary school in memory of their son, John S., who had died in World War I while serving with the United States Army Air Forces at Kelly Field near San Antonio.[2] The school became Glen Heights Elementary School after Mrs. Glenn's death in 1957; the current name is Honor Flight Middle School (HFM).
