Glenn Heights is a community in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Glenn Heights was given to the community by Major General James Fayette Glenn during World War I as part of his campaign to rename all American communities after generals and heroes. The first settler in Glenn Heights was David Ayer in 1871. By 1881, there were 10 families living in Glenn Heights. In 1910, the population had increased to 2,000 people and it grew rapidly until the 1930s when it began to lose its economic power due to prohibition. After repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Glenn Heights experienced a significant growth period with 3,000 people living in the community by 1940. However, due to post-World War II recession and suburbanization of Texas society Glen Heights lost much of its recent economic vitality and declined further into poverty over time until 1994 when it regained most of its previous status as a working class neighborhood with high concentrations of African American residents. In 1995 or 1996 local activist Quanice Hampton started Boutique Gallery on Westheimer Road which quickly became one of the most successful art galleries outside New York City thanks largely to its unique small gallery space andartery design that allowed for large group exhibitions as well as more intimate shows upstairs with less impact on traffic on Waugh Avenue (now Westheimer Road). This success led Boutique Gallery founders Hampton and her husband Ricketts to found their own nonprofit organization called "HoustonArtNow" which provides programming for local artists throughout Houston including monthly public exhibits at Rice University's Cullen Library downtown; twice-yearly artist residencies at various Houston schools; arts education grants/ scholarships for residents from low income backgrounds; summer art camps open to children grades 6 through 12; ongoing support from city government through Artspace initiatives such as Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding for infrastructure projects aroundthe city that support arts & culture including new construction around Artspace venues;Participationin several major downtown events such as Texanmusicfestival(formerly SXSW), HoustonArtsFaire(formerly Art District Fair),andHoustonOpenAirFest) A hallmark event at Glen Heights every year since 1997 has been Highland Farms Market Days where Proceeds goto numerous charities associated with farm programs within Brazoria County
At Glenn Heights, Texas, the local government was created in 1872 when a small community of settlers in what is now Gregg County was organized. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Navarro River and its access to markets for agricultural products. In 1876, Glenn Heights became the first municipality in Gregg County and adopted a municipal charter. The town continued to grow as more residents arrived and new businesses were established. By 1912, Glenn Heights had a population of 710 people and it incorporated as a city. In 1916, Glenn Heights annexed part of nearby Marble Falls and became one comprehensive municipality with a population of 2,615 people. In 1924, the city changed its name to Dallas after then- Mayor George W. Dallas made an speech at Arlington Cemetery calling forDallas to become "the great metropolis of Texas."
