In 1870, Captain Samuel Funk opened a grocery store at 640 Westheimer that became one of the most successful businesses in Glenn Heights. By 1902 there were 10 stores operating throughout Johnson County withCaptain Funk's Grocery being the only store open 24/7! In 1915 John Worthy established his seed storage business here before moving it to Farmers Branch two years later. Worthy served as mayor of Glenn Heights from 1951-1957; he also founded Rice University here inHouston during that time period along with many other important milestones within our community including construction of Lamar High School (now Houston Eisenhower High School), First Baptist Church (now Magnolia Baptist Church) & Dr Pepper Stadium (Houston Astros baseball stadium). As this small community went through various changes over time it preserved its individuality even as neighboring communities changed around them - such as Longwood Avenue becoming I-10 leading to Houston while Main Street remained straight leading into downtown Houston; passing through Glendale Cemetery until development removed all but 7 tombstones leaving today’s wide walkway between Glendale Cemetery & Main Street! Today you can find several restaurants&Cafes close by like Starbucks Coffee Company(just east of I-10 exit @ FM 1960), Mexican restaurant El Coyote(on SW corner of FM 1960 & Loop 610) as well as several convenience stores like Kroger Supermarket(just east off I-10 exit 511)...All these shops have reopened since Hurricane Harvey caused major damage back in September 2017!

The Deering Ranch was one of the largest cattle ranches in Texas at that time and it became known as "Glenn Heights" for its proximity to a high plateau that overlooked the town of Glenn Falls. The Deers operated their business until 1886 when they sold their property to J.F. Higginson, an American merchant who had recently come to Texas from Houston. Higginson developed the land into a large dry goods store and post office which he named Glenn Heights after his home countryman, Sir James Clerk Maxwell (1841-1926). Higginson's purchase brought about some economic development in Glenn Heights which helped bring new life to the town during its early years. One of the most important events that took place during this time was the incorporation of Glenn Heights as a city on November 3rd, 1907 by Austin Mayor George W. Smith with help from City Councilmember Lamar Huntley and City Marshal Harry Laughlin Jr.. At first, much of what happened in Glenn Heights involved local farming or ranching activities; however, ashtone began developing into a major center for manufacturing and commerce during this early period in our town's history. This progressivism may have been because many local businessmen were Democrats who felt disenfranchised by Republican rule at that time. In 1916, Austinite Virgil Eaton founded Eaton Tire & Rubber Company on Main Street; this company soon became one of Austin's leading businesses and played an important role in cashing In on post-World War I prosperity by creating jobs forAustinans across all sectors including agriculture, transportation, retail trade and servicessector businesses alike In 1937 another important event occurred when photography pioneer Frank Capra purchased twelve acres near downtown Glen Heights from developer Henry Kuykendall for $10,- 000 dollars Capra quickly established himself as one of Travis County's most successful entrepreneurs during this time period with his film production company Republic Pictures It wasn't until 1964 when Glen Heights experienced another significant transformation when developer Lamar Huntley donated four acres north of Interstate 35E to Glen Oaks Baptist Church so that it could build an expanded religious community anchored around social work education programs This donation markedthe beginningofa long eraof philanthropyin Glen Heights where donations continueto be criticalto our continuing success
