The first wave of immigrants arrived in 1836 and named their settlement after General James Glenn. The second wave of immigrants came in 1849 and named their settlement after Governor development Joseph Grimes. The third group of immigrants arrived in 1871 and named their settlement after President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1907, the community name was changed to Glenn Heights because some residents wanted a name that would be associated with both its educational institutions (Glenn Heights High School and Baylor University) as well as its agricultural products (horses, cattle, corn). The Glenn Heights community began developing in earnest during the early 1900s when farmers started moving into the area to settle down and raise crops. By 1924, there were over 100 families living in Glenn Heights. The economic recession of the 1930s led to a decrease in population but by 1945 there were over 350 residents living in Glenn Heights. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Fort Worth moved into Glen Heights for military service; this led to an increase in population again by 1949 due to postwar growth patterns. By 1972, there were over 1,000 residents living in Glencrest thanks to suburbanization policies enacted by local government officials. However, rapid growth did not last and by 2000 only 400 people lived within Glencrest proper while 2200 people lived within Glencrest-area suburbs plus 300 more people who resided within 10 miles of Glenbrook Farms Airport (the airport's parent company). Despite recent declines in population size it is still an important part ofTexas history for two primary reasons: First, it remains one of Texas' biggest areas for agricultural production; second, it has been home to several important universities including Baylor University which originated from Glenn Heights Elementary School (now part of Baylor University main campus).
