It is no secret that Georgetown, Texas was home to one of the most important scopes in American history. The 100-inch reflector telescope known as the El Paso Telescope was built here in 1907 by Doctor John Couchman and Dr. George Ellsworth. It quickly became the centerpiece of the research program at Baylor University, and it remains an iconic symbol of Baylor’s astronomy department to this day. But how did this telescope get started? And where exactly did its components come from? In fact, much of what makes this telescope so unique is also a testament to its builders: both Couchman and Ellsworth were self-taught astronomers who constructed their own telescopes on their own properties in rural Texas. The El Paso Telescope was actually one of several scopes built between 1907 and 1916 by various amateur astronomers across America in order to help support government funding for research programs at universities. The El Paso Telescope itself wasn’t actually built until 1907, but it played a significant role in helping shape American astronomical research during that time. Thanks to its massive size and reflector design, theEl Paso Telescope helped researchers image very large targets far away from Earth with unprecedented clarity. This technology would later be used to build some of America’s most famous telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope and King James Observatory – all thanks tothe El Paso Telescope!

In 1895, a group of businessmen in Georgetown, Texas founded the American Optical Company. The company manufactured telescopes and other optical equipment. In 1912, the company merged with the Canadian firm Roper & Co. to form the Roper-Osterwald telescope factory in Georgetown. This factory produced large telescopes for use by astronomers and other scientific researchers. In 1926, the American Optical Company was merged with English optics firm Swann & Warburton to form Swann-Osterwald Observatory Corporation. This corporation operated three observatories: Swann-Osterwald Observatory in Austin, Texas; Eastdestructive Observatory at Cedar Hill outside Dallas; and Vilcabamba Observatory on Cerro Tololo Mountain in Chile. From these observatories, scholars made important discoveries about heavenly bodies and their movements during eclipses, solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, meteor showers, and more.
Georgetown, Texas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1887 and has since grown to be a major center of commerce and culture in southwest Texas. Georgetown is home to two universities, Georgetown University and Baylor University. It also contains several businesses, including the Georgetown-based Bluegrass Boys & Girls Band and the Georgetown Golf Club.

Despite this trauma, however, Georgetown continued to grow throughout the postwar years; by 1970 it had reached a population of nearly 350,000 people. Today, Georgetown is one of America's most diverse and vibrant cities; its rich history has left it well-situated to continue thriving into the future.
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by Sam Houston. The new state was named for general and president James K. Polk. In 1848, the Republic of Texas gained its independence from Mexico. On December 15,1849, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at San Jacinto Heights to Ulysses S. Grant and his army. On January 6, 1850, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War and established United States control over what is now Southern Texas.
