Georgetown, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Georgetown is part of the El Paso–Edinburg–Antioch, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Georgetown" comes from the Ojibwe word gi-wag-a meaning place of arrival or settlement. The first post office for Georgetown was established in 1869. The town began as a cattle and farming community with modest beginnings. In 1870, James Axthelmffer built the first house in what would become Georgetown. By 1880, Georgetown had a blacksmith shop and two churches—one Baptist and one Methodist—and several businesses including a store and farm wagon service. In 1887, United States Senator John Clements moved to Georgetown to campaign for reelection against his then- congressman friend Sam Rayburn. After arriving in town on horseback from Wichita Falls, Rayburn discovered that there were no stores or restaurants within walking distance of his home so he decided to open what would become his most famous restaurant in Texas—Rayburn’s House BBQ & Grain Store—in what is now known as the Clements Building on Main Street near Broadway Road. The growth of Georgetown led to its incorporation as an organized village in 1907 under the name of GeorgetOWNeVillage Incorporated (GVI). In 1916 GVI adopted its present name: Georgetown Township (now Hudspeth County) . During World War II many residents served in the military and many houses were requisitioned by the government for use as barracks or storage units; some remain standing today as examples of early postwar architecture. After war ended many residents returned home but continued to live in their wartime housing until it was sold off during the 1970s and 1980s throughout much of downtown; however some remain standing such as Mrs Armstrong’s Annex which housed local nurses during WWII; it has been restored and is currently used as a museum with exhibits about local history

John F. Kennedy was born in the town of Georgetown, Texas on November 17, 1887. At the time of his birth, Georgetown lay within the Republic of Texas and was part of the Mexican-American War. In 1865, following General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s victory over Confederate forces at San Jacinto, Texas became a state and was named for James K. Polk, who had played a leading role in negotiating peace between the U.S. and Mexico after that battle. As a result of its annexation by Mexico in 1846 as part of that country’s effort to solidify its control over what is now southernmost border states (Oklahoma and New Mexico), Texas also acquired land east of the Colorado River including Georgetown which during much of its history functioned as an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most economic activity until more recently when oil production has become a major factor. The first people to live in Georgetown were Native Americans who arrived from Chiapas in early pre-historic times. Potawatomi are believed to have been among these early settlers; however their presence is not confirmed through archaeological evidence alone. Spanish traders likely visited or traversed this area during the 16th century during their expeditions seeking new routes to Market Street via present day Wichita County before returning home via Corpus Christi Bayou along today’s IH 35 corridor In 1849, Major General Zachary Taylor took command of United States Forces stationed at Fort Sam Houston while Mexican forces besieged Austin; Taylor used his position to gain leverage against Mexican President José Joaquín Primo de Rivera and forced him ultimately to sign an armistice on January 2, 1850 ending hostilities between our two countries On July 4th 1870 American general Winfield Scott halted Mexican cavalry charges near what is now Third Street Bridge upon occupation by Ulysses S Grant military forces That same year both houses of Congress passed legislation providing Forgiveness Certificate to all citizens who had served in various parts Of The Mexican Revolution including members from Georgetown On October 1st 1870 boundariesbetween Uvalde County & Travis County were established with Gonzales Creek as its headwaters The first school opened in Georgetown on December 3rd 1870 by Dr John Ritchie attended by 10 students grades 1-6 . A second school followed about one year later but it closed due lack enrollment . The only other schooling available for children at that time wasprovided by private tutors . In 1889Gonzales Creek Dam impounded water leaving only enough water for farming communities upstream & around present day Round Rock & Grand Prairie while still allowing irrigation into surrounding areas giving rise to names like Trinity Lake , Buffalo Bayou & Dayton Lakeside Of note ,on November 15th 1890 Rev W H Wilkinson delivered an address titled “A Memorial Address To Our Veterans Who Are Absent From Home On Political Expedition And Who Have Left Us To Serve Our Country Alone ” dedicated specifically to those service men& women lost during Andrew Johnson’s Presidency
Georgetown is a city in northeastern Texas, United States. The population was 8,065 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Bexar County and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Georgetown were Spanish explorers on their way to New Mexico in 1692. They named it San Antonio de Padua because of its location near that city's church, San Antonio de Padua. In 1836, General Sam Houston occupied Georgetown and renamed it for himself as Houstontown after his capital in Texas. In 1845, businessman George A. White established what is now known as White's General Store at the corner ofMain Street and Elm Street in Georgetown. This store became one of the most important businesses in the town until it closed its doors in 1922. georgetown was taken over by Confederate forces during the American Civil War on April 6, 1865, and became known as "Humble" or "Tower City" due to Confederate Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton's bombardment of Union positions there on April 12 that destroyed many homes and stores along Main Street. On September 11, 1865, Gregory Porter surrendered at Fort Bend County Jail after leading a slave revolt at Galveston Island off Galveston Bay which began on August 25 and continued until October 3rd when he was captured by Union troops under Major General Ulysses S. Grant
