Georgetown, Texas is a town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio metropolitan area. Georgetown is located on the banks of the Medina River and has a long history as an agricultural center. The town began as a small Indian settlement called Poteetown on July 4, 1836, by pioneers led by Captain John C. Frémont. In 1858 it became part of the newly formed Republic of Texas after Mexico ceded most of Central America to the United States in that year's Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town was founded on land that had been donated by family members of General Sam Houston and other early leaders in Texas independence movement. By 1865 Georgetown had become one of the largest towns in Texas with over 10,000 residents; however its future prospects were uncertain because cotton production dwindled during Reconstruction Era difficulty following American Civil War (1865-1877). In 1887 Georgetown incorporated as a village and changed its name to Georgetown proper when it annexed nearby Villas de las Flores and Village de la Union. In 1902 Georgetown annexation created what later became San Antonio City Limits District No 2 which included all but the Striped Ranges northward to Harlingen Creek (now part of Loop 610 West). In 1904–1906 construction began on what would eventually be known as Mission Parkway which connected downtown with Agricultural Park eastward through present-day La Mesa Heights and Turtle Bayou neighborhoods before terminating at Interstate 10 exit 78 about two miles west-northwest of downtownSan Antonio. Georgetown, Texas is a town in Baylor County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Georgetown was founded in 1845 by Colonel John Nichols and his wife Judith Bourke Nichols as a small community on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1849, Georgetown became an independent municipality when it seceded from Baylor County. The first post office was opened in Georgetown on November 30, 1850. In 1860, Georgetown became a part of Dallas when that city was organized. In 1876, after annexation by Dallas, Georgetown lost its autonomy as a municipality and merged with the rest of Dallas to form one large city. As part of this merger, all but one block of downtown were destroyed and replaced with new buildings housing City Hall and other government institutions. Today most people living in Georgetown refer to themselves simply as "Dallasites." The growth ofDallas has led to increased traffic congestion along I-635 which intersects with US-290 southwest of town center; ditches have been dug around some intersections to allow for more efficient flow of traffic while also providing limited access to some portions of town during rush hours (e.g., I-635 interchange). A bypass project is under consideration that would reduce these delays by running US-290 north directly through town instead of passing through central streets which are often congested during rush hours

In 1870, Georgetown made headlines when it became known as the "City of Crime" due to its high levels of criminal activity. In 1912, however, Georgetown renamed itself after James K. Polk because he had been president during that year's World War I.
