The town's namesake is George Washington Carver who came to Georgetown in 1871 to open a cotton gin and found what would eventually become the first Agricultural Experiment Station in Texas. In 2004, Georgetown became an accredited university after being awarded federal funding through the Higher Education Assistance Act (HEAA). The university offers undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences; professional programs including law enforcement and accounting; graduate degrees in business administration and engineering; and continuing education courses leading to certificates or diplomas from other colleges or universities. Georgetown was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after Georgetown, Kentucky, which Fenton had visited while on a business trip. In 1850, the town had a population of only sixty-five people. By 1860, it had grown to over one hundred people. During the Civil War, Georgetown volunteers contributed their time and money to help fight for the Confederacy. After the war ended, the town changed hands several times until it finally came under Union control in 1865. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in the early 1970s.
