Georgetown, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. Georgetown was founded in 1836 by Captain James Fenton and his men as a stop on their journey from San Antonio to Lubbock. The name change came about because of the religious affiliation of most of the original settlers: Baptists, Presbyterians and Methodists. The first school in Georgetown was built on what is now Main Street. In 1845, Rev. John Sweeny donated land to build a church and convent on what is now Walnut Street. The first Christian sisters were sent to Georgetown from Illinois in 1846 by Bishop Talbot of Dallas for education and missionary work among Indian students living near Lubbeth Springs east of Georgetown. By 1860, there were twelve churches in Georgetown with 305 residents attending services each Sunday morning; however, this number dwindled over time because many people left for better opportunities elsewhere or became involved with white slavery instead of following God’s commands to avoid it. In 1865 local farmers started raising cotton and began exporting it to New Orleans; this caused an increase in business for the merchants who had been operating out of Georgetown since before Independence Day (May 14). Many people also migrated westward during this time including Captains Fenton, John Hogg and Wm Axton who all settled near Midland City in Medina County after being driven out of their homes byUnion forces during the Civil War (1865-1866). A new courthouse was built starting construction in 1886 using funds collected from sales tax imposed upon businesses within Hudspeth County which helped finance various government improvements such as roads and schools throughout the county; that same year also saw the opening of the first post office in Texas with mail service coming into town through Coyote Creek Railroad Station just south Main Street when it opened its doors after years of efforts by Reverend JT Bigham who served as Manager until his death back at home on October 16th, 1886 aged 79 years old followed two weeks later by Mrs C Boyd who would serve until her death one month later due to ovarian cancer only minutes after taking over one hundred percent occupancy making her the longest servingmanager ever at that time!
