Despite this setback for Mexico, President Houston decided to continue his push for westward expansion and began construction on what would become known as The Alamo Creek Rancho San Antonio de Bexar (later named Georgetown). The rancho was located near present day Austin, Texas on the banks of The Alamo Creek River. It is said that early settlers considered it their home because it offered them plenty of land and good water supply. The grazing operation at The Alamo Creek Rancho San Antonio de Bexar provided meat for local farmers as well as food for troops defending against Spain during its invasion of Texas in 1846-48. By 1850, other settlers had moved into the area around Georgetown and began building homes or small businesses around The Alamo Creek Rancho San Antonio de Bexar. “The town grew rapidly outmoding any Indian village which might exist nearby; its people became very rich through trade with Mexicans living along the riverbanks…. By 1870, the population had reached 5,000 and by 1880 it had grown to 15,000. Throughout its history, Georgetown has been a major center for trade and industry with a focus on agriculture. Today, the city is home to several businessesincluding two large cotton plantations—the White family’s Cotton Kingdom and Humble Oil & Gas Company’s Big Cotton Plantation—as well as three smaller cotton plantations and two small manufacturing companies. Additionally, there are several parks in thecity that offer excellent opportunities for recreation including Recreation Park District #1 which includesadjacent White Marsh Lake; Park District #2 which includesoursites Cornerstone Mall; and Southpark at East University Ave., which features ancrowded playgroundand Multi-purpose arena/. Georgetown was first settled by Missourians in 1836 as part of what was then called Indian Territory after they abandoned their earlier effort to create a permanent settlement there. Although initial difficulties faced by Georgetown were common among frontier settlements during this time period - floods being one particular issue - it soon became successful due to its location on an important trading route between eastern Kansas City (now Kansas City) and St Louis (now St Charles).
