Georgetown, Texas is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Georgetown was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1876 and named for George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. It had a post office from 1881 to 1912 and a school from 1881 to 1924. Georgetown was the only municipality in Comanche County when it was created on November 3, 1907. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Georgetown was James Hancey on October 25, 1876. He purchased 640 acres of land east of the San Antonio River from José Baca and his band of Kickapoo Indians for $2 per acre. A struggle ensued over who would build the first house; Hancey or John Pemberton Jr.? Eventually Hancey built himself a log cabin on his property which he called "The Gables." In 1889 Georgetown won its first election as an independent city with incorporation as such by vote of its citizens following annexation by San Antonio into the new Austin City Limits Municipal District that same year. In 1910 Georgetown became part of Austin when that city's boundaries were redrawn through annexation by Travis Countysites including Gonzales (now El Paso), Hudspeth (now Midland), and Tomball In 1923 the local school board voted to close all but one school in Georgetown due to budget cuts caused by World War II austerity measures stipulated within Congress' New Deal program known as "the Great Society". After years of negotiations between parents and educators, five schools reopened in 1951:elementary (grades K-5), middle/junior high (6-8), high school (9-12) and adult education annexe (Teacher Education Institute). An all female high school also opened in 1961 followed by two all male academies – Eagle Canyon High School for Girls in 1978 and West Side Junior College until 1984 when it merged with Navarro Valley Junior College. Georgetown was founded in 1836 by Robert E. Lee and his wife, Martha Washington. The town is located on the Texas-New Mexico border and became an important trade center for the area during the early days of its settlement. In 1861, after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, Georgetown became a key military stronghold in the fight against slavery. The town was sacked by Union troops in 1862 and 1863, but it continued to serve as a garrison until 1865 when it was surrendered to Union troops. After the war, Georgetown grew rapidly as businesses moved in and people started moving out of Confederate territory. By 1870, Georgetown had reached its current size and status as a major cotton port.
