After the war ended, many people returned to Georgetown while others moved into other postwar towns throughout Tarrant County. In 1957, Georgetown became an incorporated city governed by a mayor and City Council with limited power over local issues. The current mayor is Darrell Steinberg with a two-year term beginning on January 1st of each year according to city ordinance ยง 20-2-111(a). Most government activity takes place through City Hall located at 601 Elm Street which also houses various departments including Police Department; Parks & Recreation; Fire Department; Streets Department; Emergency Management Committee; zoning board; public works committee; and economic development committee which meets monthly as well as providing input on proposals for new businesses or housing developments within the city limits which are then subjected to community review before adoption or rejection by the City Council

Georgetown was founded in 1821 by the Republic of Texas, and became a city on October 1, 1835. It was named for General James Fenton, who had helped lead the Texas Revolution against Mexican rule. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in what is now Georgetown in 1836. The city grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as cotton trade intensified along the lower Colorado River Valley and as farmers developed new land around it. During this time, Georgetown also became known as a center of learning due to its location near several universities and its fine schools of law and medicine. The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. As the war unfolded, much of north Texas switched sides, including Georgetown. In 1865, Confederate forces burned down most of downtown Georgetown before withdrawing southward. During Reconstruction following the war, Georgetown struggled to regain its previous prosperity. However, growth resumed after federal troops withdrew from southeast Texas in 1874. In 1907, Georgetown merged with nearby Dallas to form a new city called Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW).
