Georgetown, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1881 as a Baptist Establishing Place and named after Georgetown University in Washington D.C., which then served as its primary educational and cultural center. The first school in Georgetown was built on what is now Main Street. A new building was erected on State Highway 36 in 1903 to serve as the first high school for students from Georgetown Township and parts of Hudspeth County. In 1923, a new high school was built on land that had been donated by Caddo Parish president John Beaumont to become the second high school for students from Georgetown Township and parts of Hudspeth County. In 1951, a new gymnasium and football stadium were added to make it one of the largest high schools in Texas. In 1957, Ira Allen became president of Georgetown High School when his predecessor resigned because he could not get along with other members of the board of trustees. Allen made many changes at Georgetown High School including initiating extracurricular activities such as varsity soccer and tennis; creating an honor society; developing a global awareness curriculum; increasing arts programs; establishing relationships with local churches;and implementing anAntidisestablishmentarianism policy which prohibited religious discrimination on campus
The first white American settlers in Georgetown, Texas were James Bowie and his brother John. They arrived in 1836 and began to build a ranch on what is now the north side of Georgetown. In 1839, they married Eliza A. Tyler and moved their family to the area which became known as Georgetown. The original post office was established in 1840, and the first store was opened in 1851. By 1860, there were nineteen families living in Georgetown. The population peaked at around two hundred people in 1870, but decreased to just seventy-five by 1910. In the late 1800s, it was one of the most important commercial centers in east Texas because of its connections with New Orleans and San Antonio. It also served as a cultural center for Texans and Mexican Americans who lived nearby. The city experienced several natural disasters during this time including an earthquake that killed many people in 1872 and a flood that caused significant damage in 1902. During World War II, much of Georgetown was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan while other parts were used as military base or munitions plants. However, since 1945, growth has resumed with apartments being built along Elm Street and new shopping malls popping up all around town .
