The area that now makes up Georgetown was inhabited by the Kiowa and Comanche tribes, and firearms were not well known to the early pioneers. The first school in Georgetown was built in 1837, and by 1840 there were also houses located near what is now Market Square. It wasn’t until 1851 that a post office was established in Georgetown. In 1875, the first courthouse in what is now Georgetown was constructed. By then, gun protection had become an important part of life in town. In 1907, new laws were passed which aimed to prohibit handguns from being manufactured or sold within one hundred yards of any public building or school. This prohibition continued until 1993 when it was lifted effective January 1st of that year. Only a few homes survived this episode that left behind an eerie reminder of Houston's bravery in battle one hundred years later when he donated land at current day Baylor University for that institution's founding. The first successful cotton gin in America was built by Nicholas Hahn at what is now Old Main Street in Georgetown in 1839 which helped start a new industry in Texas that continues today with cattle ranching being one big focus for many families hereabouts In 1860,ialso known as “The War Between States” occurred between Confederate States North Carolina (the state then represented by Representative James Kameron) and Southern United States Alabama (the state then represented by Representative William Fenton). As Confederate forces advanced into Central Texas from Arkansas via San Antonio Bayou they encountered Unionist forces marching along the Brazos River under command Major General George Buell who planned to cross over into Central Texas at Grand Prairie where he would establish military headquarters before moving north towards Waco (now Wichita Falls) to join rebel General Burnside before finally reaching Austin ). Unfortunately for Confederate General Hood his army got lost during its crossing into Texan territory which resulted in him being forced march all the way back across San Antonio Bayou instead of following Buell's main force which eventually reached Austin despite heavy losses。 Consequently this event marks one of history’s greatest turning points as it initiated a long conflict within Southern United States over control over Central TX region ultimately leading to secession from United States . Today many descendants still live around central TX are involved with agriculture or ranching while others have relocated elsewhere due mainly to economic reasons
