Georgetown, Texas is a small town located in Wise County, Texas. The population was 2,854 at the 2000 census. Georgetown is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1873 by John B. Dent and his wife Lillie Averill Dent as a combination of two farms they owned on the banks of the Trinity River. The original settlers were timberjacks and their families who arrived in wagons drawn by oxen or horses and set up camp for six days near what is now Georgetown Elementary School. They built aLog Cabin named "Alma" which still stands today across from Georgetown High School on North Elm Street. In 1875, John B. Dent Jr., Jnoah Waddell, Charles Hodge and others formed the first post office within the present boundaries of Georgetown with Mr. Waddell serving as its first Postmaster. In 1886, James Guthrie became headman of Georgetown after serving as an Indian agent for many years in Apache County In 1898, when newly elected Mayor Denton Payne discovered that he had no power to levy taxes without approval from his predecessor George Washington Carrington (the founder of Arlington), Payne petitioned American Indians for assistance to collect taxes he said were due him from various sources including cattle operations run by white farmers east of Wilson Road on the San Jacinto River tributary known as White Sands Creek which ran through his parish but not within city limits; this request was granted On November 17th 1898 local farmer James Guthrie moved a herd of cows out to pasture between White Sands Creek and Wilson Road because he had been having trouble getting them past one particular chicken fence manned by two white men who would let no other animals past without payment; this event led to regional fame when news spread about how these cowboys were able to trespass into Carrington's parish despite being unable to pay for passage When Payne took office on January 3rd 1899 he realized that since there was no way he could force citizens to pay their property taxes even though they lived outside city limits, he decided instead to issue warrants requiring anyone found guilty of violating city ordinances or driving off county property should be jailed for up to six months with hard labor if necessary; this policy later became known as "Guthrie's Law." On March 4th 1899 City Council adopted a resolution condemning Spanish Fort Naval Station under construction just upstream from Georgetown and asking United States Marines stationed at Ft Worth Naval Air Station whether they would like help putting up anti-Spanish fortifications around town; this request too was eventually granted After World War I began many businesses closed down due largely to low prices available for goods exported from America while war production increased Prices did increase however so much so that demand dropped causing lots more business closures than new ones opened so it can be called generalized recession rather then specific government failure

The first post office in Georgetown was established on February 15, 1840. The first store was built on Main Street in 1841. A school for boys and girls opened on July 21, 1841. A Methodist Episcopal church also opened in 1861 and the first Baptist church in Georgetown was organized on October 12 of that year. In 1865 a drove-in theater opened called "The Drive In". It closed operations two years later because of financial problems. In 1886 a hotel called "The Athenaeum"opened near downtown with 100 rooms and $5 per night rates for customers who wanted to use its bathroom or library facilities outside of their room during business hours (the rate at that time). That same year resulted in the establishment of an agricultural fair which still occurs every August since then with over 400 exhibitors from all over America come to visit about 275 acres of farm products from 30 states plus Canada
