The history of Georgetown, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s when the area wasippi bottomed and difficult to travel. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Georgetown were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in search of new land to colonization. In 1836, Congress passed an act that created the Republic of Texas, which included all of Texas north of the Mexican border. The Act also provided for a congressional district within present-day Georgetown that would be represented by Congressman James K. Polk. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas and captured much of the state including Georgetown. After Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most of Texas was divided among Union armies as part of the Compromise Of Nerritude Agreement. In 1868, Congress re-established a federal district within present-day Georgetown that would include all or part of present-day Corpus Christi County and Austin County (including present day Houston). In 1895, following passage of the McKinley Tariff Act, activities in and around Georgetown changed abruptly with many companies moving away from town because tariffs had increased dramatically on products made in America such as cotton and lumber. This led to a decline in population but also an increase in development along McNeil Street near Washington Park where businesses began sprouting up like weeds due to easy access to water and natural resources unavailable elsewhere in town. By 1907 there were over 100 businesses located along McNeil Street alone while Washington Park housed only 12 structures
