The history of gun lasers begins with their inception in 1949, when two physicists at Texas A&M University, Jack Nichols and Al Cohn, developed a gun laser that could be used for target practice. The first commercial Gun Laser Corporation was founded in 1951 by Jack Nichols and William H. Weldon to produce this type of laser weapon. In the early 1960s, the United States Army's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) began development of a larger and more powerful gun laser called the Hughes H-1. This weapon had the potential to revolutionize military technology as it was capable of firing powerful projectiles up to several hundred yards away. It operated for over 10 years until it was decommissioned on July 1st, 2003 due to budget cuts within DoD.
