At that time, guns were still being made with New England-made barrel and there was no information about where the barrels came from. In 1892, Captain W. H. Godwin of the Texas Rangers purchased a mill in Georgetown and began manufacturing gun barrels using this mill’s resources. In 1899, Captain Godwin also founded Godwin & Co., which became one of the largest manufacturers of gun barrels in America until it closed its doors in 1929. Throughout these years, Georgetown has had its own custom shop called “Godwin & Sons” that manufactured both rifle and shotgun barrels. This business continued until around 1978 when it was taken over by another manufacturer named Krieger & Sons Incorporated. After several years of operation at this location, they too closed their doors in 1984. Today, only a few remaining pieces of old “Godwin & Sons” Barrels remain on staff at the company’s current location across from IHOP on South Capitol Street in Austin, Texas! These relics date back to before World War II and are some of the most collectible firearms items on display today!
